Centro Seno Ticino
Women’s health has historically been one of the core strengths of the center, thanks to the presence of highly qualified and specialized medical expertise. The activities of the Centro Seno Ticino ensure the treatment of approximately one-third of all breast cancer cases recorded annually in Ticino.
Breast cancer, also known as mammary carcinoma, is the most common cancer among women (affecting 1 in 8), with approximately 6,300 new cases per year. Cancerous diseases are generally caused by alterations in the genetic material of cells. Several factors can contribute to these mutations and play a role in the development of breast cancer, including: family history (e.g., breast cancer in the mother, sister, or daughter), hereditary predisposition (genetic mutations, such as BRCA gene mutations), hormonal influences, external influences (viruses, pollutants, second hand smoke, UV radiation), overweight, lack of physical activity / sedentary lifestyle, alcohol consumption, and smoking.

Mission
Our mission is to raise awareness in each patient and support her so that she can return to living her personal and professional life with peace of mind after this challenging—but no longer insurmountable—journey. To achieve this, it is essential not to be left alone, but rather to rely on a dedicated team with whom a relationship of absolute and lasting trust can be built. Every woman who turns to us can be certain that she will be Welcomed, Heard, Cared for, and ultimately Guided.
When should I consult a specialist?
Breast cancer often presents no symptoms for a long time. Depending on the type, it can take several years before the tumor reaches a palpable size. To help you understand what to look for, here is a list of symptoms that may indicate an abnormality and warrant consultation with a specialist:
- A lump, usually painless, or a hardened area in the breast
- Skin changes (inflammation, redness, peau d’orange texture)
- Tightening or swelling of the skin (especially around the nipple area)
- Nipple changes (such as inflammation)
- A sudden difference in size between the two breasts
- Nipple discharge (not related to pregnancy or breastfeeding)
- Enlarged lymph nodes in the armpit / under the collarbone / alongside the sternum
- Unexplained weight loss
